1. Regulations:

(1) Prâcîna Pandith Preliminary Examination

1.1 Candidates may appear for this examination through an Educational Institute recognized by the Government or as a Private candidate. Course study is one year.

1.2 Examination subjects

1. Main Subjects                 

    1. Sinhala

    2. Pali

    3. Sanskrit

2. Supplementary subjects     

    4. Buddhist studies

    5. History

    6. Hindi

    7. Tamil

    8. English

1.3 Selection of subjects

          Candidates should appear for the three main subjects with or without supplementary subjects in one sitting. Those who wish to take one out of the five supplementary should take it along with the main subjects.

1.4 Question papers

          One subject is consisting of two questions papers. The period for each subject is three hours. The total number of marks for each question paper is 100. Candidates should obtain a minimum of 40% marks for passing each subject.

1.5 Passes

          (a) Candidates should obtain passes from the three main subjects in one sitting for the award of Prâcîna Pandith Preliminary Certificate.

          (b) Candidates to obtain a pass they should acquire a minimum of 40% marks from each question paper. However, if a candidate has obtained not less than 30% marks for one of the two question papers of a particular subject and not less than an average of 40% marks for both papers of the same subject, he will be entitled to a pass in that subject.

1.6 Referred Pass

          Regarding candidates who fail only in one subject out of the subjects required to complete the examination, they will be entitled to a referred pass only if they have obtained a number of marks not less than 25% of the total number of marks allotted to such failed subject. They should pass that subject within the succeeding two years and complete the examination.

1.7 Second Class Pass

          Candidates will be entitled to a Second Class Pass is they have obtained not less than 55% marks for three (3) papers out of the question papers belonging to the three main subjects and obtained passes from the other question papers and if the average in all the question papers is not less than 55%.

1.8 First Class Pass

          Candidates will be entitled to a First Class Pass if they have obtained not less than 70% marks for three (3) papers out of the question papers belonging to the Main Subject and a pass from the other papers and if the average in all other papers is not less than 70%.

1.9 Supplementary subject

          Candidates who have completed the Prâcîna Pandith Preliminary Examination, Prâcîna Pandith Intermediary Examination or Prâcîna Pandith General Degree Final Examination may appear for any discretionary subject out of the supplementary subjects recommended here in any discretionary year and separate certificates are awarded for that purpose.

2. Prâcîna Pandith Intermediate Examination

2.1 Candidates who have passed the Prâcîna Pandith Preliminary examination can appear for this examination through an Educational Institute recognized by the Government or as a Private candidate. Course study is one year.

2.2 Examination subjects

2.3 Selection of subjects

          All candidates should appear for the three (3) main subjects in one sitting for the Prâcîna Pandith Intermediate Examination. Those who wish to appear for one of the five supplementary subjects should take that subject along with the main subjects.

2.4 Question papers

There are three question papers for each of the three Main Subjects of Sinhala, Pali, Sanskrit. Time assigned for each question paper is 3 hours. The total number of marks for each question paper is 100.

2.5 Passes

          (a) Candidates should obtain passes from the three main subjects in one sitting for obtaining the award of Prâcîna Pandith Intermediate Certificate.

          (b) A minimum of 40% marks should be obtained from each question paper to secure a pass. However, if any candidate has obtained not less than 30% marks for one question paper out of the three question papers of any particular subject and if the average number of marks of the three question papers belonging to that subject is not less than 40 marks, he will be entitled to a pass from that subject.

1.6 Referred Pass

          Regarding candidates who fail only in one subject out of the subjects required to complete the examination, they will be entitled to a referred pass only if they have obtained a number of marks not less than 30% of the total number of marks allotted to such failed subject. 2.7 Second Class Pass

2.8 First Class Pass

          Candidates will be entitled to a First Class Pass if they have obtained not less than 70% marks for four (4) papers out of the question papers belonging to the Main Subject and a pass from the other papers and if the average in all other papers is not less than 70%.

3. Prâcîna Pandith General Degree Examination

2.1 Candidates who have passed the Prâcîna Pandith Intermediary Examination can appear for this examination through an Educational Institute recognized by the Government or as a Private candidate. Course study is one year.

2.2 Examination subjects

1. Main Subjects                  

    1. Sinhala

    2. Pali

    3. Sanskrit

2. Supplementary subjects    

    4. Buddhist studies

    5. History

    6. Hindi

    7. Tamil

    8. English

3.3 Selection of subjects

          All candidates should appear for the three (3) main subjects in one sitting for the Prâcîna Pandith General Degree Examination. The candidates may at their discretion appear for one of the Supplementary subjects too.

3.4 Question papers

There are three question papers for each of the three Main Subjects of Sinhala, Pali, Sanskrit. Time assigned for each question paper is 3 hours. The total number of marks for each question paper is 100.

3.5 Passes

3.5.1. For obtaining the Prâcîna Pandith General Degree Certificate, candidates should pass the three main subjects with in five (5) years from the year of appearing for the first time, for the Final Examination (including that year too).

3.5.2. A minimum of 40% marks should be obtained from each question paper. However, if any candidate has obtained not less than 30% marks for one question paper out of the four question papers of any particular subject and if the average number of marks of the four question papers belonging to that subject is not less than 40 marks, he will be entitled to a pass from that subject.

3.6 Second Class Pass

          Candidates will be entitled to a Second Class Pass is they have obtained not less than 55% marks for the six (6) papers out of the question papers belonging to the three main subjects and obtained passes from the other question papers and if the average in all the question papers is not less than 55%.

3.7 First Class Pass

          Candidates will be entitled to a First Class Pass if they have obtained not less than 70% marks for six (6) papers out of the question papers belonging to the Main Subjects and a pass from the other papers and if the average in all the papers is not less than 70% marks.

3.8 Râjakîya Pandith Degree

          Candidates who obtained the First and Second Class Passes in the three languages of Sinhala, Pali and Sanskrit at the Prâcîna Pandith General Degree Examination will be awarded with "Râjakîya Pandith Degree" after the compilation of a book written under a title approved by the Education Board provided that such book is accepted as successful.

3.9 Supplementary subject

          Candidates who have completed the Prâcîna Pandith Preliminary Examination, Prâcîna Pandith Intermediate Examination or Prâcîna Pandith General Degree Final Examination may appear for any discretionary subject out of the Supplementary subjects specified here in any discretionary year and separate certificates are awarded for that purpose.

3.10 Dates for receiving application and conducting the examinations

          Prâcîna Pandith Preliminary Examination, Prâcîna Intermediate Examination and Prâcîna Pandith General Degree Examination are conducted during the month of August every year by the Commissioner General of Examinations. Application forms for the examinations may be obtained from the Department of Examinations.

Issue of Certificates and Award of Degrees

          All certificates will be issued by the Secretary of the Oriental Studies Societies of Sri Lanka based on the results of the examinations issued by the Commissioner General of Examinations.

4. Prâcîna Pandith Special Degree Examination

4.1 Subjects of Specialization

          Prâcîna Pandith Special Degree Examination will be held in the following 3 subjects.

          Sinhala, Pali, Sanskrit

4.2 Selection of subject for specialization

          Candidates appearing for the Prâcîna Pandith Special Degree Examination should select one of the three subjects of Sinhala, Pali and Sanskrit in which they appeared for the General Pandith Degree Examination.

4.3 Course Structure

          Each subject in the Prâcîna Pandith Special Degree Examination is consisting of five courses of study. The fifth course is in writing of poetry.

4.4 Examination

          In the Prâcîna Pandith Special Degree Examination, the candidates should appear for the five question papers of three hours duration for which the total number of marks will be hundred (100) for each question paper.

4.5 Passes

Candidates should obtain a minimum of 40% marks for each question paper for a general pass. For obtaining a Second Class Pass they should score not less than 55% marks for every question paper. Candidates should obtain not less than 70% marks for every question paper for a First Class Pass.

4.6 Preliminary requirements for registration

          1) Candidates should have passed the Prâcîna Pandith General Degree

          AND

          2) Should have been registered at least one year before appearing for the examination (maximum before 2 year)

5. Grantha Vishârada Post Degree Graduate Examination

5.1 Candidates who pass the Prâcîna Pandith General Degree Examination or who have obtained a degree relevant to the main subjects in the Prâcîna Pandith Degree Examination from a recognized University will be awarded with the "Grantha Vishârada Degree" provided that they submit a dissertation creative work under title approved by the Education Board and obtained successful results.

5.2 Preliminary requirements for registration

          (a) Candidates should have the following preliminary requirements for the registration for Grantha Vishârada Post Graduate Examination.

(1) Should have obtained the Prâcîna Pandith General Degree Special Degree OR

(2) The General Arts Degree from a recognized University, with two subjects out of Sinhala, Pali and Sanskrit OR

(3) An Honors Degree having 2 subjects out of Sinhala, Pali and Sanskrit (as main and supplementary subjects)

5.3 Registration Procedure

1. Candidate should apply in the form prescribed for registration for the Grantha Vishârada Post Degree Course. The application forms may be obtained from the Secretary, Oriental Studies Society of Sri Lanka.

2. The title and synopsis of the dissertation creative work should be annexed to the application.

3. After its approval by the Education Board is obtained, candidates will be registered for the study of the Degree.

5.4 Period of Study

          The period of study for the Grantha Vishârada Post Degree Course is 2 years for full time students and 3 years for part-time students.
