An outline of the history of English Language and Literature

This course will expect the students to study the main trends in English Language and Literature after the 18th century.

(1) The impact of the teaching of English Literature - Nature poets on Sinhala Literature

(2) The impact of American English on English Language and Literature

(3) The impact of translations into English/ Sinhala - of Chekov Brech on Sinhala Literature

(4) The growth of commonwealth English Literature and Sri Lankan Literature

 

N.B. Students will be required to be familiar with at least any two works  belonging to all of these sections.

Questions will be based on the main characteristics of  the period which could be answered with reference to any two works, authors or characteristics of the candidate is familiar with.

The paper will be divided into

18th century and 19th century trends historical and literary 20th century English poets - free verse movement.
